The interpersonal role-play is consistently one of the most anxiety-inducing stations in any fire assessment center. Transitioning from a peer on the apparatus floor to a supervisor enforcing policy requires a significant psychological shift. Assessors use this exercise to test your emotional intelligence, policy knowledge, and ability to handle conflict under pressure. Mastering the mechanics of this station is essential for securing your promotion.
Establish the Supervisory Mindset
The moment you enter the room, you are the officer. Many candidates fail this station by trying to remain the “buddy” or apologizing for having to conduct the counseling session. Approach the mock subordinate with professional empathy, but maintain your command presence. Your primary loyalty must immediately shift to the organization, municipal liability, and the safety of the crew.
Utilize Active Listening and Fact-Gathering
Role-play actors are specifically briefed to throw curveballs, make excuses, or become defensive. Do not interrupt or immediately talk over them. Use active listening to let the actor vent or explain their side of the story. Once they finish, clarify the facts. This demonstrates to the assessors that you gather all necessary information before rendering a judgment or issuing discipline.
Enforce Policy Without Compromise
Once the facts are established, tie the subordinate’s behavior directly to standard operating procedures (SOPs) or departmental code of conduct. Clearly articulate why their actions are unacceptable and how they negatively impact the team and the public. Keep the conversation focused on behavior and policy, rather than personal attacks or subjective opinions.
Set Clear Expectations and Follow-Up
A counseling session is incomplete without an action plan. Detail the specific steps the subordinate must take to correct their behavior, whether that involves remedial training, utilizing the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), or facing progressive discipline. Before closing the scenario, establish a firm timeline for a follow-up meeting to review their progress.
